European Standard Sprockets – Product Overview

Korea Ever-Power European standard sprockets and platewheels cover the complete DIN 8187 / ISO R606 roller chain series from 03B-1 (5 mm pitch) to 24B-1 (38.1 mm pitch). Every sprocket is machined from C45 carbon steel with induction-hardened tooth flanks, giving consistent wear resistance across the rated load and speed range. The tooth profile is machined to match the ISO 606 geometry exactly, ensuring full engagement with any compliant European standard roller chain and minimising wear at the chain-tooth contact over the life of the drive.

The range covers three strand configurations. Simplex sprockets (single-strand) engage one chain run and are the most common type for general industrial conveyor, agricultural and process drives. Duplex sprockets (double-strand) carry two parallel chain strands side by side on one hub, allowing higher torque or speed ratios in the same shaft-to-shaft centre distance. Triplex sprockets extend this to three strands for the highest load applications — commonly used in heavy conveyor drives, marine chain systems and high-power agricultural equipment where a single chain strand would require an excessively large pitch.

Platewheels are a variant within this series where the sprocket tooth spaces are filled — producing a solid disc profile rather than recessed pockets between teeth. They are used with flat-top conveyor chain, slat chain and any attachment chain where the chain links project beyond the standard roller envelope. The solid disc face prevents attachment plates or slats from snagging in the recesses and ensures smooth, low-vibration chain passage at the sprocket.

All sprockets in this series are supplied in stock bore (unfinished bore) as standard — allowing the installer to machine the bore, keyway and tolerance to match the exact shaft diameter. European Standard Sprockets – Key Technical Features

DIN 8187 / ISO R606 Tooth Profile

Every sprocket is machined to the ISO 606 tooth profile geometry — the same standard used by European roller chain manufacturers. This ensures full geometric interchangeability with any DIN 8187 or ISO R606 compliant chain, regardless of chain manufacturer, without tooth-entry shock or accelerated wear at the chain-tooth contact.

C45 Steel – Induction-Hardened Tooth Flanks

The stock material is C45 medium carbon steel. Tooth flanks are induction-hardened after machining to provide a hard wear-resistant surface at the chain-tooth contact zone while retaining a tough core. Surface hardness is typically 52–58 HRC at the flank, falling to the core hardness of 180–220 HB through the hub section — giving the right combination of wear resistance and impact resistance.

Simplex, Duplex and Triplex Configurations

For a given shaft centre distance and sprocket diameter, a duplex drive carries approximately 1.7× the load of an equivalent simplex drive, and a triplex drive approximately 2.4×. This allows a higher drive rating in an existing mounting without changing sprocket diameters, shaft spacings or chain pitch. Multi-strand sprockets must be paired with the correct strand count of duplex or triplex roller chain — single-strand chain must never be run on a duplex or triplex sprocket.

Platewheels for Attachment Chain

Platewheels replace the recessed tooth spaces with a solid disc, providing a flat running surface for flat-top chain, slat chain and attachment chain where extended pins or attachments project beyond the normal roller envelope. The solid face prevents mechanical interference between attachments and the sprocket body — critical in food processing conveyor and slat conveyor drives running ISO 606-compatible attachment chain.

Stock Bore – Maximum Flexibility

Stock bore sprockets are supplied with the bore unfinished — ready to be bored, reamed and keyway-broached to the exact shaft diameter, tolerance class and keyway dimensions required. This is the correct choice when shaft diameters fall outside the finished bore range, when a non-standard tolerance is required, or when the installer's workshop can carry out the machining at lower cost than ordering a custom-bored sprocket.

How to Select the Right European Standard Sprocket

European standard roller chain types and sprocket selection guide

Selecting the correct European standard sprocket involves four steps:

  1. Identify the chain size. Read the chain designation from the chain link plate — it will be marked as 06B, 08B, 10B or similar. If no marking is visible, measure the pitch (pin-to-pin distance) and compare to the pitch column in the specification table above.
  2. Count the strands. A single-strand chain requires a simplex sprocket (-1 suffix). Two parallel strands require a duplex sprocket (-2 suffix). Three strands require a triplex sprocket (-3 suffix).
  3. Determine the tooth count. For a given drive ratio and centre distance, the tooth count on drive and driven sprockets determines the speed reduction. Standard practice is to use a drive sprocket of 17–19 teeth minimum for smooth running.
  4. Choose the bore type. For shafts in standard diameters, consider our finished bore sprocket series for immediate fit. For taper-bush mounting, see our taper bore range. For all other shaft sizes, stock bore sprockets machined to your exact diameter are the standard choice.

What is the difference between DIN 8187 and ISO R606 sprockets?
DIN 8187 is the German standard for short pitch roller chains and corresponding sprocket tooth profiles, and ISO R606 (now ISO 606) is the international standard that covers the same range. In practice they are equivalent — the tooth geometry, pitch dimensions, roller diameter and inner width specified in both standards are the same. A sprocket marked DIN 8187 will run on any chain marked ISO 606 of the same chain size, and vice versa. Korea Ever-Power European standard sprockets are manufactured to conform to both standards simultaneously.
Can I use a European standard sprocket with an American ANSI chain of the same pitch?
No — and this is a common source of drive failures. Although 08B-1 and ANSI No.40 chain both have a 12.70 mm pitch, the roller diameter differs: 08B has an 8.51 mm roller, while ANSI No.40 has a 7.92 mm (5/16") roller. The tooth profile of a DIN 8187 sprocket is designed around the larger 8.51 mm roller — running ANSI No.40 chain on a DIN 8187 sprocket produces poor tooth contact, incorrect seating and accelerated wear on both the chain and sprocket. Always use European chain on European sprockets and ANSI chain on ANSI sprockets. Our American standard ANSI sprocket range covers No.25 through No.200.
What tooth count should I use for my drive sprocket?
The minimum recommended drive sprocket tooth count for smooth running is 17 teeth — below 17 the polygon effect of a chain engaging successive teeth becomes noticeable as speed and load variation in the chain. For most industrial drives with moderate speed ratios (up to 5:1), a drive sprocket of 17 to 25 teeth is standard. For high-speed drives (over 200 rpm at the drive sprocket) a tooth count of 21 or higher is preferred to reduce chordal action. The driven sprocket tooth count is determined by the required speed ratio: driven Z = drive Z × (output speed / input speed).
What is the maximum bore available for stock bore sprockets?
Maximum stock bore depends on the chain size and tooth count — the hub diameter (dm) limits how large the bore can be before the hub wall becomes too thin. For a 06B-1 sprocket with Z=20, the hub dm is 25 mm, giving a practical maximum bore of around 20–22 mm. For larger tooth counts in the same chain size, dm increases, allowing a larger bore. The D1 (stock bore max) column in the specification tables lists the catalogue maximum — larger bores on lower tooth counts require a custom hub extension or a move to a larger chain size. Contact us with your bore requirement if you are near the catalogue limit for your tooth count.
Can you supply non-standard or OEM tooth counts not listed in the tables?
Yes. The tables above list the standard production range. Custom tooth counts — including Z above 125 or any non-listed count — are produced by CNC gear hobbing to your specified tooth count, bore and hub geometry. Minimum order for non-standard tooth counts is typically 5 pieces, but single prototypes can be quoted — contact us. Lead time for non-catalogue sprockets is 10 to 20 working days depending on the chain size. Dimensional inspection reports and material certificates are available for OEM production batches.
Do you supply sprockets with duplex or triplex chains where only one strand is needed now but may expand later?
Yes — it is common practice in conveyor design to fit a duplex sprocket now while running a single simplex chain strand, leaving the second tooth row unused but ready. When drive load requirements increase in future, a second chain strand can be added to the existing sprocket without any shaft or sprocket change. This is a cost-effective way to build future capacity into the drive at the initial installation stage. Inform us when ordering if you are running simplex chain on a duplex sprocket so we can ensure the hub geometry accommodates both possible chain runs.
