Korea Ever-Power heavy duty series roller chains are an uprated variant of the standard short pitch roller chain range, designed for applications where the operating load, shock loading severity, or duty cycle exceeds what the standard A series can comfortably handle at the same pitch. The heavy duty designation refers to thicker link plates - typically 25% to 40% heavier than the standard A series plate at the same pitch - combined with larger diameter pins and in some sizes an increased inner width, all while maintaining the same pitch so that the chain can run on standard pitch sprockets without any modification to the sprocket or drive configuration.

The EP H series covers chain sizes *35H through 240H in simplex (single strand, suffix -1), duplex (two strand, suffix -2), and triplex (three strand, suffix -3) configurations. The H suffix is the industry-standard designation for the heavy duty plate geometry: a 35H chain has the same 9.525 mm pitch and the same roller diameter as a standard 35 chain, but the link plates are thicker, giving it a higher tensile strength rating and a higher fatigue life under repeated loading. This matters in applications such as agricultural harvester main drives, log deck drives, packaging machine main drives, and general industrial drives that start and stop under load, experience vibration from coupled machinery, or must handle the shock peaks generated when slack suddenly comes out of the chain during load reversal.

Beyond the standard H series, Korea Ever-Power manufactures a comprehensive range of non-standard heavy duty chains under the BH and BHF designations. These are chains developed for specific OEM applications where neither the standard A series nor the standard H series geometry exactly matches the sprocket tooth form or structural requirement of the original equipment. The BH range includes straight side plate variants (where the inner and outer plates are the same flat profile rather than the usual waisted figure-eight shape), flanged plate variants for guide track applications, and combination chains with mixed roller and bush positions for specific machine functions. Bush chains within both the H series and the BH range are marked with an asterisk (*) - for these chains the d1 dimension in the specification table refers to the external diameter of the bush rather than an outer roller diameter, because no separate outer roller is fitted.

The Korea Ever-Power heavy duty chain production line uses the same cold-forming and heat treatment processes as the A series, with through-hardened alloy steel pins, case-hardened bushes, and heat-treated plates. The heavier plate sections in the H series require longer heat treatment cycles to achieve uniform core properties, and the larger pin diameters require closer dimensional control in grinding to maintain the correct pin-to-bush clearance for good lubrication film retention. Pre-loading is applied to every assembled H series chain before pitch measurement to eliminate installation elongation, in the same manner as the standard A series range. Connecting links in the H series use cotter pin or split pin retention rather than the spring clip used in lighter standard chains, reflecting the higher joint loading in heavy duty service.

When to Choose Heavy Duty Series Over Standard A Series

Frequent Start-Stop Under Load

Every stop-start cycle introduces a tensile shock pulse into the chain as the slack side is suddenly pulled taut. The thicker plates in the H series have a higher cross-section area and thus a higher fatigue limit under repeated tensile cycling. Applications that start and stop more than 20 times per hour under load should specify H series as a minimum.

Impact from Coupled Machinery

Reciprocating presses, punch presses, jaw crushers, and cane mills all generate sharp shock pulses through their drive chain. The service factor for such applications typically reaches 1.5 to 2.0 on the standard A series, making the H series the correct choice without requiring a move to a larger pitch or more strands.

Agricultural Heavy Drives

Combine harvester main drives, straw walkers, and threshing drum drives all combine high intermittent loads with shock from crop ingestion. The H series is widely specified as OEM equipment for these drives because the thicker plates extend service life in field conditions where chain replacement is expensive and inconvenient.

High Vibration Environment

Vibrating screens, vibrating feeders, vibratory conveyors, and crushers all transmit high-frequency vibration into the drive chain through the sprocket and shaft. Fatigue cracks in link plates initiate most readily at the pin hole edge under alternating stress. The H series thicker plate distributes this stress over a larger area, resisting crack initiation.

Same Sprockets, Higher Capacity

The H series uses the same pitch as the A series equivalent, so it fits the same sprockets without any modification to the drive layout. Where a standard A series chain has been found to have insufficient service life, upgrading to H series requires only a chain replacement, not a redesign of sprocket centres, shafts, or guards.

Non-Standard OEM Requirements

The BH and BHF non-standard series are produced for OEM replacement where the machine was originally designed to a proprietary chain specification not covered by the standard H series. Straight side plates (BHF), flanged plates, wider inner widths, or combined roller and bush positions are all available. Supply a sample chain or drawing for quotation.

Agricultural Machinery

EP 40H through 100H simplex chains are the standard specification for combine harvester main drives, straw walker drives, and grain auger drives. The 40H-1 is the single most widely used heavy duty chain in agricultural machinery worldwide. The higher plate thickness absorbs the shock loading from crop ingestion and from stones entering the feed mechanism, giving field service life approximately 40% longer than the equivalent standard 40 chain under the same conditions.

Press and Punch Drives

Mechanical presses, punch presses, and stamping machines transmit a sharp shock pulse through the drive chain at the moment of punch contact and punch breakthrough. EP 80H-1, 100H-1, and 120H-1 simplex and duplex chains are commonly specified for press main drives and flywheel drives. The heavier plate section resists the fatigue cracking that would otherwise develop at the pin hole edge under repeated high-amplitude stress cycles.

Mining and Quarry

EP 120H through 240H chains for primary crusher drive chains, vibrating screen drives, and apron feeder drive chains in mining and quarry plant. Duplex 120H-2 and 160H-2 are the standard size range for jaw crusher main drives. The H series is also specified for coal preparation plant drives, where water and coal dust contaminate the lubrication and the drive operates under variable load from the coal feed rate fluctuation.

Sugar Industry

Sugar mill main drives and cane elevator drives use EP heavy duty chains in the 100H to 200H range. The juice environment is highly corrosive to steel chain, and the cane ingestion load is unpredictable - a stone or dense root clump entering the mill can momentarily spike the load to several times the rated running load. The H series provides the combination of corrosion resistance (through correct lubrication specification) and fatigue strength required for these demanding tropical mill conditions.

What is the difference between H series and standard A series at the same pitch?
The H series uses thicker link plates than the standard A series at the same pitch. For example, a standard 60 (08A) chain has a plate thickness of 2.42 mm; the 60H chain has a plate thickness of 3.25 mm - approximately 34% thicker. The larger plate cross-section gives a higher minimum tensile strength (31.8 kN versus about 31.8 kN for the standard - the gain is primarily in fatigue life and plate thickness rather than tensile strength at the smaller sizes, becoming more pronounced at 80 and above where the H series clearly outperforms the standard chain). The pin diameter and roller diameter remain the same, so H series chains run on standard pitch sprockets without any modification.
Can I use H series chains on my existing A series sprockets?
Yes, H series chains run on standard ANSI A series sprockets without any modification. The pitch, roller diameter, and inner width of the H series match the A series equivalents at the same chain number. The only dimension that differs is the plate thickness, and this has no effect on sprocket engagement because the sprocket tooth form engages the roller and inner plates rather than the outer plates. The thicker outer plates simply project slightly further past the sprocket tooth, which is within the normal design clearance.
What do the suffix codes on BH series chains mean (BH, BHF1, BHF2, etc.)?
The BH designation identifies these as heavy duty variants of the ISO B series roller chain geometry, produced by Ever-Power for specific OEM applications. The F in BHF stands for flat side plate (also called straight side plate) - a plate shape where the inner and outer plates are the same rectangular profile rather than the usual waisted figure-eight shape used in standard roller chains. The number after F identifies the specific plate profile variant (F1, F2, F3, F5 etc. are different proprietary plate dimensions used by different OEM machine manufacturers). The V suffix (as in 12BV or 60HV) identifies a chain with a specific plate profile used in high-speed applications. When ordering BH or BHF chains as replacements, always provide the complete EP chain number from the specification table and verify against a sample of the original chain.
Is lubrication different for H series compared to standard chains?
The lubrication requirements for H series chains are the same as for standard A series chains at the same pitch and speed - mineral oil applied at the pin-bush joint by drip oiler, bath, or spray system depending on chain speed. The lubrication method does not need to change when upgrading from A series to H series. What does sometimes change is the lubrication interval in severe applications: because the H series is typically specified for shock-loaded drives with more demanding duty cycles, more frequent oil replenishment may be required to maintain the oil film under high joint-load conditions. For drives with service factors above 1.5, consider a continuous drip oiler even at speeds below 1 m/s.
What connecting links are used for H series chains?
H series chains use cotter pin (split pin) connecting links rather than spring clip connecting links, reflecting the higher joint loading in heavy duty applications. The cotter pin connector is more secure under shock loading than the spring clip, which can dislodge if the chain vibrates aggressively. For chains 40H through 60H, a two-cotter connecting link is standard. For 80H and above, a bolted connecting link with hex bolts and lock nuts is available as an alternative to the cotter pin for applications where the connecting link must be removed and refitted frequently. Always replace the connecting link at each chain replacement regardless of its apparent condition.
Can you supply non-standard BH and BHF chains as replacement for existing machines?
Yes. The BH and BHF range is specifically intended as OEM replacement for machines that use non-standard chain specifications. If your chain number appears in the BH or BHF table above, supply the EP chain number, quantity in metres or link count, and whether a connecting link is needed. If your chain does not appear in the table, send a sample of at least 5 connected links for dimensional survey and EP will identify the closest match or produce a custom chain to your sample dimensions with a minimum order quantity of 10 metres. For urgent replacements, provide: pitch (measured across 10 consecutive pin centres, divided by 10), roller diameter or bush external diameter, inner width between plates, pin diameter, and plate thickness. Photographs from both face and edge are also useful for identifying the plate profile type.
