A Series Roller Chain - Product Overview

Korea Ever-Power A series short pitch precision roller chains are manufactured to the ANSI B29.1 dimensional standard, making them the standard choice for North American OEM equipment and for export machinery supplied into markets where ANSI specification is dominant. The A series designation refers to the ANSI tooth form and plate geometry - chain numbers 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200, and 240 correspond to ANSI chain numbers, with the pitch in eighths of an inch (chain 40 means 4/8 inch, which is 12.700 mm pitch).

The Korea Ever-Power EP-A range covers the complete ANSI B29.1 programme from chain 15 (4.7625 mm pitch) through chain 240 (76.200 mm pitch). Each pitch size is available in simplex (single-strand, suffix -1), duplex (two-strand, suffix -2), triplex (three-strand, suffix -3), and multiple-strand (4, 5, 6, and 8 strand) configurations. Chains marked with an asterisk (*) are bush chains: the roller column is replaced by a sleeve, reducing weight and cost for low-speed applications where roller rotation is not required for sprocket engagement. The d1 dimension for these chains is the external diameter of the bush.

All EP-A series chains are assembled from cold-formed and heat-treated components. Pins are through-hardened alloy steel, ground to size. The assembled chain is pre-loaded to seat all joint clearances before final pitch measurement and packaging in corrosion-inhibiting oil.

A Series Roller Chain - Key Technical Features

Cold-Formed Precision Plates

All inner and outer plates are blanked and formed on progressive dies to net shape without secondary machining. This maintains consistent plate thickness and hole-to-hole distance across the full production run, resulting in tighter pitch variation than manually formed plates.

Through-Hardened Ground Pins

Pins are produced from alloy steel bar, through-hardened to 58 to 62 HRC at the bearing surface, and ground to size. The hardness profile extends through the full cross-section - not surface-hardened only - giving maximum fatigue resistance under reversed bending at the outer plate interface.

Pre-Loading at Assembly

Each assembled chain passes through a pre-loading station where a controlled tensile load is applied to seat all joint clearances before final pitch measurement. This eliminates the initial elongation that would otherwise occur in the first hours of operation and ensures measured pitch at delivery reflects the in-service dimension.

Oil-Packed for Shipping

All chains are packed with a film of anti-corrosion mineral oil on the bearing surfaces before coiling and packaging. This protects joint surfaces from oxidation during storage and shipping, and provides initial lubrication during commissioning. No pre-cleaning is required before installation on standard mineral oil drives.

ANSI / ISO / DIN Cross-Reference

EP A series chains carry cross-referenced part numbers to ANSI B29.1, ISO 606, and DIN 8187. The same physical chain is referenced under multiple designation systems: EP-08A corresponds to ANSI 40, ISO 08A-1, and DIN 08A-1. Ordering by any of these designations produces the same chain.

General Power Transmission

ANSI 40 and ANSI 50 simplex chains are the most widely used sizes globally for drives in the 2 kW to 30 kW range. ANSI 80 through ANSI 240 handle heavier machinery drives. The A series covers gearbox output sprockets, machine head drives, pump drives, and general industrial transmission at any speed up to the chain speed limits in the ANSI power rating tables.

Packaging and Food Machinery

ANSI 40 and ANSI 50 simplex chains are extensively used in packaging machine drives, filling line conveyors, and labelling machine index drives. Fine pitch options (chain 25 and chain 35 bush chain) are specified for high-cycle counting mechanisms and pill dispensing equipment. Stainless steel variants of the A series are available for food contact environments.

Heavy Industrial Drives

ANSI 120 through ANSI 240 simplex, duplex, and triplex chains for press drives, steel works auxiliary drives, and paper mill section drives. Multiple-strand chains (4 to 8 strand) in ANSI 40 through ANSI 120 provide very high power transmission capacity where the pitch must remain small for compact sprocket dimensions. 8-strand ANSI 80 provides over 450 kN minimum tensile strength at only 25.4 mm pitch.

Automotive and OEM Equipment

ANSI 40 and ANSI 50 duplex chains are widely specified in automotive plant drives including transfer bar drives and welding jig positioners. Agricultural OEM manufacturers in Korea, Japan, and North America specify A series chains for combine harvester intermediate drives, tractor PTO gearbox outputs, and tillage equipment drives.

What is the difference between A series and B series roller chains?
A series chains follow the ANSI B29.1 standard; B series chains follow the ISO 606 (formerly DIN 8187) standard. At the same chain number prefix, A and B series chains have different roller diameters, inner widths, and plate thicknesses and are not interchangeable. A series 08A (ANSI 40) has a roller diameter of 7.95 mm and inner width of 7.85 mm; B series 08B has a roller diameter of 8.51 mm and inner width of 7.75 mm. Using an A series chain on a B series sprocket or vice versa will result in incorrect engagement and rapid wear. Always verify the standard before ordering replacement chains.
What does the asterisk (*) mean on chain numbers like *25 and *35?
The asterisk denotes a bush chain (sleeve chain) rather than a full roller chain. In a roller chain, the outer roller rotates freely on the bush and contacts the sprocket tooth. In a bush chain, there is no outer roller - the bush itself contacts the sprocket tooth. Bush chains are lighter and less expensive and are suitable for slower-speed drives where the chordal impact loading that would cause roller fatigue is not present. The d1 dimension in the specification table for bush chains refers to the external diameter of the bush rather than an outer roller diameter.
How do I calculate how many strands I need?
The basic process: (1) Calculate design power = rated power x service factor (1.0 smooth load, 1.25 to 1.5 moderate shock, 1.5 to 2.0 heavy shock). (2) Divide design power by the rated power per strand from the chain power rating table for the selected pitch at your operating speed. (3) Round up to the next whole number of strands. When the strand count exceeds three, consider moving to the next pitch size with fewer strands for better long-term reliability - large multi-strand assemblies require precise shaft alignment and generate high bearing loads.
What lubrication does an A series roller chain require?
A series roller chains require oil lubrication at the pin-bush joint. Method depends on chain speed and load: below 1 m/s use periodic manual oil application targeting the gap between outer plate and roller; 1 to 4 m/s use a continuous drip oiler or wick oiler; above 4 m/s use a continuous oil bath, disc oiler, or pump-circulated oil spray. Use SAE 30 to SAE 60 mineral oil depending on ambient temperature. Do not use grease as the primary lubricant - it is too thick to penetrate the pin-bush clearance.
When should I replace an A series roller chain?
Replace when elongation reaches 2% for precision or high-speed drives (above 1.5 m/s) or 3% for low-speed or non-critical drives. Measure at least 10 pitches under moderate tension and compare to nominal dimension (number of pitches x pitch value). Also replace if any roller is cracked or missing; any plate is cracked; any joint is stiff; or the chain shows visible corrosion through the oil film. When replacing the chain, inspect sprocket teeth - if they show hooked or asymmetric wear, replace the sprockets at the same time.
Can you supply A series chains cut to length with connecting links?
Yes. EP supplies A series chains cut to any specified link count with spring clip connecting links, cotter pin connecting links, or half links as required. For chain lengths requiring an odd number of half pitches, half links (offset links) are available for ANSI 40 through ANSI 80. For multi-strand chains, specify the connecting link type - spring clip connecting links are rated at the same maximum tensile strength as the chain and suit most applications. For very high load or high-speed multi-strand drives, pressed-in connecting link pins are recommended to prevent plate lift at speed. Supply the chain designation, required number of links, and connecting link type when ordering.
