Double Pitch Sprockets American Standard

Double pitch sprockets are designed for use with American standard double-pitch roller chain to ANSI B29.100 — chain with twice the pitch of the equivalent standard ANSI chain but the same roller diameter and inner width. The chain number designation reflects this: “2040” means double pitch of #40 (½″ × 2 = 1″ pitch), “2060” means double pitch of #60 (¾″ × 2 = 1½″ pitch). Double pitch chain runs on alternating rollers — every other pin carries a roller, and intermediate pins are plain. Double pitch sprockets have tooth spacing to match this alternating roller pattern.

Double Pitch Sprockets — American Standard

The commercial justification for double pitch chain and sprockets is simple: for a given conveyor speed and chain pull, double pitch chain costs significantly less per metre than standard pitch chain, and the larger pitch circle diameter for a given tooth count means sprockets are cheaper to produce at large diameter. For a low-speed, light-load conveyor carrying 500 kg/m at 0.3 m/s, 2040 chain with a 12-tooth sprocket is a cost-effective alternative to #40 chain with a 24-tooth sprocket — the pitch circle diameter and chain pull capacity are equivalent, but the chain and sprocket cost less.

Double pitch sprockets are available in two tooth forms: Type A (standard tooth) — every tooth engages a roller; and Type B (alternate tooth / extended pitch) — only alternate teeth are full height, with the intermediate teeth reduced to clear the plain pins of the double pitch chain. Type B sprockets produce smoother engagement at higher speeds. The chain number, tooth count and type must match exactly — a Type A double pitch sprocket will not run smoothly with double pitch chain above approximately 50 rpm.

Type A vs Type B Double Pitch Sprockets — Which Do You Need?

The tooth form selection for double pitch sprockets depends on the chain speed and the smoothness of engagement required. Using the wrong type causes accelerated chain and sprocket wear and is a very common installation error.

Type A — Standard Tooth (Every Tooth Engages)

Max speed: ≤50 RPM at sprocket

Every tooth is full height. On each revolution, alternate teeth engage rollers and the teeth between them pass through the plain pin gaps in the chain. At low speeds (below 50 RPM), the impact as teeth engage is negligible. At higher speeds the polygon effect at alternate teeth causes a noticeable vibration — use Type B.

✔ Gravity conveyors, slow pallet conveyors, grain auger drives, drag-chain bucket elevators below 50 RPM

Type B — Alternate Tooth (Extended Pitch Tooth)

Recommended: 50–300 RPM at sprocket

Alternate teeth are full height (engage rollers); intermediate teeth are reduced to plain-pin clearance height only. This means the chain engages only on alternate teeth — effectively the sprocket runs as if it had half the tooth count from an engagement frequency standpoint. This eliminates the polygon effect caused by alternate-tooth engagement and produces smooth, quiet running up to moderate speeds.

✔ Slat conveyors, parts washing, bottle conveyors, light assembly conveyors — any double pitch drive above 50 RPM

⚠️

Critical: A Type A sprocket on a double-pitch chain drive running above 50 RPM will generate significant vibration and accelerate chain roller wear within weeks. Always specify Type B for conveyor applications — only specify Type A for confirmed ultra-low-speed applications below 50 RPM. When in doubt, specify Type B.

Key Technical Features & Applications

Light-Load Conveyor Economy

For a given conveyor chain pull at slow speed, double pitch chain provides equal or greater chain strength at lower material and assembly cost. A 2040 chain carries the same roller load as a #40 chain but uses half the links per metre — half the pins, half the bushings, half the plates. The sprockets are also cheaper per metre of pitch circle at large diameter because the pitch is larger, reducing the number of teeth needed.

Attachment Chain Compatibility

Double pitch chain is also produced in extended attachment (K-series) variants for slat conveyors, overhead trolley conveyors and parts-washing machines. The 2040K and 2060K chains carry K-series attachments on alternate (roller) links. The same double pitch sprocket drives K-series chain — the attachment plates pass through the tooth spaces between alternate teeth on a Type B sprocket. This is the standard arrangement in American overhead conveyor systems.

Large Diameter at Low Weight

A 2080 chain 25-tooth sprocket has a pitch circle diameter of 15.9 inches — equivalent to a 25-tooth #80 sprocket — but the double pitch version is lighter and cheaper because the larger tooth spacing requires less material between teeth. For slow drives where a large diameter ratio is needed and the chain pull is moderate, double pitch is the cost-optimised choice over standard pitch at the same tooth count.

Matching Double Pitch Chain

Every double pitch sprocket in this range must run with ANSI B29.100 double pitch chain in the same chain number. Do not run standard #40/#60/#80 single pitch chain on a double pitch sprocket — the pitch spacing will not match and engagement will fail immediately. Pair with double pitch conveyor chain in the correct chain number and K-attachment style if required.
