Taper Bore Sprockets – Product Overview

Korea Ever-Power taper bore sprockets to DIN 8187 / ISO R606 are supplied pre-machined to accept the standard taper lock bush series — 1008 through 5050 — covering shaft diameters from 12 mm to approximately 125 mm depending on bush size. The taper bore replaces the conventional keyed bore and setscrew arrangement with a precision-ground internal taper that mates with the external taper of the split taper lock bush. When the bush cap screws are tightened, the taper generates a large compressive clamping load on the shaft without requiring a key for rotational drive — the friction grip alone is sufficient for all rated drive loads.

The most important practical advantage of taper bore sprockets is removal without shaft damage. Loosening the cap screws and reinserting them in the ejection holes of the bush pushes the bush free of the sprocket taper — the sprocket and bush separate cleanly from the shaft in seconds with no hammer, puller or heat required. This is the critical difference from a parallel-keyed bore, where removing a sprocket without a puller risks shaft and bearing damage, and where hammering the sprocket free can introduce shock loads into the adjacent bearing. For any drive where sprockets must be changed more than once a year, the time and tooling saved by taper bore mounting justifies the additional initial cost.

Taper bore sprockets are manufactured in three hub configurations: TS (simplex/single strand) for single-chain drives, TD (duplex/double strand) for two-strand chain drives, and TT (triplex/triple strand) for three-strand drives. The hub bore for all three configurations is the same for a given chain size and tooth count — the difference is the overall hub width, which increases with each additional strand. Browse the complete sprocket range for other mounting configurations.

Materials: standard grade is C45 carbon steel with induction-hardened tooth flanks. Cast iron (G22) variants are available for abrasive environments where graphite lubricity reduces tooth wear — see our cast iron sprocket range for details. Taper lock bushes are not included — specify the bush code and shaft diameter separately. Pair with matched European standard roller chain to DIN 8187 for a complete factory-direct drive package.

🔧 When taper bore is the right choice

  • Sprockets are changed at scheduled maintenance intervals
  • Drive is in a confined space where shaft end is not accessible
  • Reversing duty or shock loading requires positive shaft grip
  • Multiple shaft sizes are used across the same drive design
  • Sprocket must be removed without damage to adjacent bearings
  • Production stoppage cost justifies faster maintenance

Taper Lock Bush Size Guide — Shaft Range per Bush Code

The taper lock bush code determines the shaft diameter range it can accept. The sprocket must be ordered with the corresponding taper bore for your bush code. Always specify both the chain size and the required bush code when ordering.

Bush Code Shaft Range (mm) Typical Cap Screw Typical Application
1008 12 – 28 mm M8 Small conveyor, packaging machinery, light agricultural drives. 06B–08B sprockets.
1210 12 – 32 mm M8 General light-medium industrial conveyor. 06B–10B sprockets, smaller tooth counts.
1610 14 – 42 mm M10 Most common size for 08B–12B industrial drives. Agricultural machinery standard range.
2012 19 – 50 mm M12 Medium-heavy industrial conveyor. 10B–16B larger tooth counts. Elevator and fan drives.
2517 25 – 65 mm M16 Heavy industrial. 12B–20B drives. Mining conveyor, heavy pump and compressor drives.
3020 35 – 75 mm M20 Very heavy industrial. 16B–24B large sprockets. Quarry, cement and heavy plant.
3535 40 – 90 mm M20 Heavy-heavy industrial. 16B–24B high tooth count, high-load drives.
4040 50 – 100 mm M24 Very heavy plant. Large 20B–24B drives. Mining, dredge and heavy marine drives.
5050 60 – 125 mm M30 Maximum bush size. 24B and larger drives. Steel plant, heavy quarry conveyor.

Taper lock bushes are sold separately — not included with the sprocket. Always specify: (1) chain size, (2) tooth count, (3) strand type TS/TD/TT, (4) bush code, (5) shaft diameter. The bush code must be compatible with the sprocket hub bore — refer to the specification tables below.

Installation & Removal — The Taper Lock Procedure

The taper lock system requires no special tools — just a hex key (Allen key) and a torque wrench. The procedure is the same for all bush sizes.

▶ Installation

1

Clean the shaft, the bush bore and the sprocket taper — remove all oil, grease and surface scale. Any contamination reduces grip.

2

Assemble the bush into the sprocket taper bore by hand. Align the tapped and plain holes in the bush flange with the plain and tapped holes in the sprocket hub.

3

Insert the cap screws through the plain holes in the sprocket into the tapped holes of the bush. Do not fit screws through the ejection holes at this stage. Lightly oil the screw threads and under the cap head.

4

Slide the assembly onto the shaft. Rotate to the correct angular position. Tighten screws alternately and progressively — not one at a time to full torque. Final tighten to the torque value for the bush size (see torque table below).

5

After initial run-in (2–4 hours under load), re-check and re-tighten screws to specified torque. The bush seats fully on first load application and screw torque may reduce slightly.

◀ Removal

1

Remove all cap screws completely from the sprocket/bush assembly.

2

Insert the cap screws into the ejection holes — the tapped holes in the sprocket hub that were unoccupied during installation. These holes are threaded to the same pitch as the cap screws.

3

Tighten the ejection screws alternately. The screw threads bear against the bush flange, pushing the bush out of the sprocket taper. The sprocket and bush will separate from the shaft simultaneously.

4

No hammer, no puller, no heat required. The shaft and adjacent bearings are undisturbed. The bush and sprocket can be reused if in good condition.

Aplikacije

High-Maintenance Conveyor & Process Drives

Any drive where sprockets are changed at regular intervals — quarry plant, cement, aggregate, food processing — saves significant labour cost with taper bore versus parallel-keyed bore. A single sprocket change that previously required a puller, shaft examination for damage and re-machining a new bore can be reduced to 20 minutes of hex key work. At multiple sprocket positions per machine across a large plant, the maintenance time saving is substantial across a year.

Reversing Drives & Shock-Load Applications

Taper lock bush grip under cyclic load reversal is superior to a single setscrew parallel bore for several reasons: the taper creates a concentric compressive force around the full shaft circumference rather than a point load from a setscrew, and the self-locking taper angle ensures the bush cannot back off under reversing torque. For crusher chain drives, baler drives and any application with significant shock loading, taper bore is the preferred mounting method. See our full sprocket category for all available types.

OEM Designs with Multiple Shaft Sizes

Machine builders using the same sprocket across a product family with different shaft size options can carry one sprocket size and supply different bush codes for each shaft size. This reduces sprocket stock from five different bored parts to one taper bore sprocket plus five bushes. The assembly is faster on the production line and the inventory cost is lower. Bush codes 1210 through 2012 cover the majority of shaft sizes used in European industrial machinery (12–50 mm).

Tehničke karakteristike

Self-Locking Taper — No Setscrew Required

The taper angle used in the standard taper lock bush series is 8° included angle — the self-locking taper range. At this angle the friction between the mating tapers is sufficient to prevent the bush from working loose under load without any additional locking mechanism. The cap screws are required only to generate the initial seating force — once seated, the taper holds itself in position by friction and the compressive grip on the shaft.

8 Hub Profile Types

Taper bore sprockets are manufactured in eight different hub profile configurations (Types 1–8) to accommodate different sprocket-to-shaft clearance requirements, different bush flange arrangements and different hub widths for simplex, duplex and triplex chain. The Type number is assigned automatically based on the chain size, tooth count and strand configuration — you do not need to specify the type when ordering, only the bush code.

Compatible with Standard Bush Suppliers

The taper bore in Korea Ever-Power sprockets conforms to the industry-standard taper lock bush dimensions used by SIT, Mädler, Rexnord and all other major European bush suppliers. A 1610 bush from any conforming supplier will fit the 1610 taper bore in our sprockets. You are not locked into a proprietary bush source — source bushes locally if preferred or from Korea Ever-Power as a complete package with the sprocket.

Cast Iron Option for Abrasive Environments

Taper bore sprockets are also produced in G22 cast iron for quarry, cement, woodworking and agricultural environments where graphite lubricity in the tooth flank material resists abrasive wear better than polished carbon steel. Cast iron taper bore sprockets carry the -CI suffix in the part number. The hub taper bore is the same standard dimension as the carbon steel variant — the same bush fits both materials.

DIN 8187 Profil zuba

The tooth profile is identical to the stock bore and finished bore European standard sprocket ranges — full DIN 8187 / ISO R606 dimensional compliance. A like-for-like swap from a keyed bore sprocket to a taper bore sprocket of the same chain size and tooth count requires no chain length adjustment, no centre distance change and no new chain. Run matched European standard roller chain on these sprockets for best engagement.

Reusable After Removal

Both the sprocket and the bush can typically be reused after removal if the taper surfaces are undamaged and the teeth are within wear limits. Clean the taper surfaces, inspect for scoring or fretting, and regrease before reinstallation. This is not possible with a parallel-keyed bore sprocket removed by hammer or puller — key and bore damage on removal is common. The reusability of taper bore components contributes to the total cost of ownership advantage over standard keyed bores on drives with frequent sprocket changes.

Često postavljana pitanja

Do I order the bush separately from the sprocket?
Yes. Taper bore sprockets are supplied without the bush. The bush is ordered separately — specify the bush code (e.g. 1610) and the shaft bore diameter required. Taper lock bushes can be sourced from Korea Ever-Power as a package with the sprocket, or independently from any taper lock bush supplier using the standard bush code. The bush bore range must include your shaft diameter — refer to the bush size guide table above. If you are unsure which bush code is required for your chain size and tooth count, contact us with the chain size, tooth count and shaft diameter and we will confirm the correct bush code.
What is the maximum transmissible torque for a 1610 bush on a 35 mm shaft?
A 1610 taper lock bush on a 35 mm shaft, tightened to the specified 45 Nm cap screw torque, transmits a maximum torque of approximately 480 Nm (depending on shaft surface finish and assembly condition). This is the bush limitation — the sprocket C45 tooth and hub are rated to significantly higher values. If your drive torque exceeds the bush capacity, move to the next bush size (2012 or 2517) which requires the corresponding larger taper bore sprocket. Contact us with your torque, speed and chain size for a complete drive selection if required.
Can taper bore sprockets be used on tapered shafts?
No. Taper lock bushes are designed for parallel (cylindrical) shafts only. The bush bore is cylindrical — it cannot conform to a tapered shaft. Attempting to fit a taper lock bush onto a tapered shaft results in line contact at one end of the bush bore rather than full-length contact, dramatically reducing the clamping force and causing the bush to work loose under load. For tapered shafts, use a keyed bore sprocket with a shaft nut and washer arrangement, or a shrink fit bore if the drive is non-reversing.
The bush will not come out when I use the ejection screws — what should I do?
If a bush becomes seized in the sprocket taper — particularly after a long period in service — the ejection screws alone may not generate sufficient force to break the taper. Try: (1) Apply penetrating oil to the gap between the bush flange and sprocket face and leave for 30 minutes. (2) Tighten ejection screws to maximum thread capacity alternately, then apply a sharp impact blow to the sprocket hub periphery with a soft-faced mallet while maintaining ejection screw pressure. (3) For large bushes (3020 and above), a two-leg puller bearing against the sprocket face with the centre bolt bearing against the shaft end can provide additional axial force. Do not use heat on the sprocket — this distorts the taper bore and makes the next assembly inaccurate. If the bush remains seized, contact us for assistance.
Is a keyway required in the shaft for a taper lock bush drive?
No. The standard taper lock drive is keyless — the friction grip between the bush bore and shaft provides full rotational drive without a key. No shaft keyway is required. This is an advantage in cases where a new shaft is being cut and drilling a keyway is an additional machining step. However, some high-shock or high-inertia applications specify a key in addition to the taper lock as a safety backup — the bush bore has a keyway machined into it for this purpose if required. A keyed taper lock assembly provides both the taper friction grip and the positive mechanical key drive simultaneously. Specify "keyed bush" when ordering if you require this option.

"We operate a limestone crushing plant with 22 chain drive positions. Previously we needed a maintenance engineer with a full puller set and lathe access to change sprockets — typically half a day per position. We retrofitted all positions to Korea Ever-Power taper bore sprockets over two shutdowns. A sprocket change now takes one person 25 minutes. The ROI was under 8 months."

"We maintain reversing conveyor drives on a port terminal — heavy shock loading at reversal. Keyed bore sprockets were working loose on us within 3 months on the highest-load positions. Korea Ever-Power 2012 taper bore sprockets on the same drives have been in service for 14 months without any sign of fretting or movement. The taper grip holds far better under reversal than a setscrew bore."
