American Standard Steel Stock Bore Sprockets – Product Overview

Stock bore sprockets are supplied with an unfinished bore — a pilot bore drilled for reference, with the hub left full so the bore can be machined to any shaft diameter from the minimum pilot bore up to the maximum bore for that hub size. The keyway and setscrew are machined to your specification at the time of boring. This makes stock bore the most flexible option for non-standard shaft sizes, metric or inch shaft diameters, and applications requiring tolerances or keyway forms outside the standard finished bore range.

Material is C45 medium carbon steel. Tooth flanks are induction-hardened to 52–58 HRC while the hub bore area remains unhardened and machinable. All sprockets are phosphate-treated for corrosion protection during storage and early service. The most commonly ordered sizes — #40, #50, #60 and #80 in Z=12 through Z=60 — are held in stock for immediate despatch. For non-stocked sizes, lead time is 7–14 working days. Pair with standard roller drive chain for a complete matched drive.

ANSI chain and DIN 8187 chain have the same pitch for many sizes but different roller diameters and inner widths. An ANSI sprocket will not run correctly with European chain and vice versa — even where the pitch matches. Always confirm which chain standard is in use before ordering.

How to Read an ANSI Chain Number

The ANSI chain number is not arbitrary — it encodes the pitch and configuration of the chain. Understanding it lets you confirm the sprocket specification from the chain number stamped on the chain link plate.

Suffix -2 = duplex, -3 = triplex. No suffix = simplex. #25 and #35 are light-duty sizes with smaller rollers relative to pitch. Always match the chain number exactly when ordering sprockets — the suffix matters.

ANSI vs DIN 8187 — Technical Differences that Matter

Many engineers assume ANSI and European chain are interchangeable where pitches match — they are not. The differences in roller diameter and inner width mean the tooth profile must be different to achieve correct roller seating. Mixing standards causes premature wear and potential chain jump.

ANSI B29.1 Tooth Profile — Full Compliance

The tooth form is machined to the ANSI B29.1 involute profile, including the correct seating curve radius, tip relief and tooth width for the respective chain number. Every size undergoes dimensional inspection against the ANSI standard before despatch. Sprockets bearing the ANSI B29.1 designation can be run with any compliant chain from any manufacturer without adjustment.

Inch and Metric Shaft Bore Available

American machinery uses inch shafts as standard — ½", ⅝", ¾", 1", 1¼", 1½" and so on. Korean machinery frequently uses metric shafts — 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm. Korea Ever-Power bores stock bore sprockets to either inch or metric shaft diameters on request. Specify the shaft diameter in the exact form required (e.g. "1-¼" or "32 mm") when ordering to avoid conversion errors.

C45 Steel — Induction-Hardened Teeth

The same material specification as our European standard range: C45 medium carbon steel, hub left soft and machinable, tooth flanks induction-hardened to 52–58 HRC. The hardening depth penetrates at least 1.5 mm below the tooth surface, ensuring the hardened layer outlasts the useable tooth profile before the soft substrate is reached. Phosphate-treated surface for corrosion protection.

Matching ANSI Roller Chain

Every ANSI sprocket in this range should be paired with the correct American standard roller chain — the chain number must match the sprocket's chain number exactly. Pair #40, #50, #60 or #80 ANSI roller chain with the corresponding sprocket. Do not pair with DIN 8187 European chain of the same pitch — the tooth profiles are incompatible despite the equal pitch.

North American Industrial Machinery

The Americas standard for industrial machinery chain drives is ANSI B29.1. Any equipment designed or manufactured in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Colombia or Brazil will use ANSI chain. #40 and #50 are the most common sizes in light and medium industrial conveyors; #60 and #80 cover the majority of heavy industrial and agricultural OEM drives in North America. Stock bore is the standard MRO specification for replacement drives.

Korean-Manufactured Equipment

Korea uses ANSI B29.1 as its domestic chain standard — Korean industrial machinery from manufacturers including Doosan, Hyundai Heavy Industries and agricultural OEMs all specify ANSI chain. This is why Korea Ever-Power stocks the full ANSI sprocket range alongside the European range. Replacement sprockets for Korean equipment imported into Europe or Australia must be ordered to ANSI specification, not DIN 8187, even though the pitch may appear identical.

My equipment was made in Korea — should I order ANSI or European sprockets?
Korea uses ANSI B29.1 as its domestic standard — Korean-manufactured equipment uses ANSI chain and ANSI sprockets. The chain number stamped on the chain link plate will be in ANSI format: #40, #50, #60, #80 and so on. Order ANSI sprockets in the corresponding number. If the chain number uses a different format (e.g. 08B, 10B, 12B) the equipment uses European DIN 8187 chain — order European sprockets. If you are unsure, measure the roller diameter of your existing chain and compare against the ANSI and DIN tables above — the roller diameter is the most reliable way to distinguish the two standards when the pitch is the same.
What is the difference between #40 and #41 chain and sprockets?
#40 is the standard ½″ pitch ANSI roller chain with full-diameter rollers (7.95 mm). #41 is a lightweight variant with the same ½″ pitch but a smaller roller diameter and narrower inner width — it is a lighter, lower-cost chain for applications where the load capacity of #40 is not required. #40 and #41 sprockets are NOT interchangeable — a #41 chain will not seat correctly on a #40 sprocket because the seating curve is machined for the #40 roller diameter. Always match the full chain number including the digit suffix. #41 is primarily used in light conveyors, vending machines and light domestic applications.
Can I bore the sprocket to an inch shaft size on a metric specification?
Yes — we bore and keyway stock bore sprockets to any shaft specification, inch or metric, up to the maximum bore for that hub. The keyway is machined to the appropriate standard for the shaft: ANSI/ASME B17.1 key dimensions for inch shafts, ISO/DIN 6885 for metric shafts. Specify the shaft diameter exactly — "1 inch" and "25 mm" are close but not the same (25.4 mm vs 25.0 mm); the bore tolerance must be correct for the actual shaft diameter. For inch shafts with a keyway, specify the key width and depth or state the shaft diameter and we will apply the standard ASME B17.1 key size for that shaft diameter.
Are #100, #120 and larger sizes held in stock?
#100 and #120 are stocked in the most common tooth counts (Z=11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 25) for immediate despatch. #140 and #160 are semi-stocked — most sizes available within 7 working days. #200 and #240 are made-to-order — lead time 14–21 working days depending on tooth count and strand configuration. For all large-chain-number sizes above #100, contact us to confirm current stock availability and lead time before placing an order. Bore machining is done at the time of order for all sizes.
